Persons over 50 may begin to develop drug or alcohol problems for many reasons, some associated with changes such as retirement or loss of a loved one, and some associated with the effects of aging on the body's ability to metabolize alcohol or other drugs. Use of drugs or alcohol in the face of adverse consequences in significant life areas is a good rule of thumb to use in determining the presence, or not, of a drug or alcohol problem.
